What is in a name?
In times of trouble we search for meaning or comfort in a name or an idea. This concert seeks to name the things that make us feel safe, that give us comfort, that bring us home.
Works by Adolphus Hailstork, Mari Valverde, Kim Andre Arnesen, and Moses Hogan explore what it means to truly welcome and accept someone, especially in difficult times. How do we build our homes to support ourselves and our communities?
Francis Poulenc’s extraordinary Figure Humane anchors the program. A defiant exploration of freedom in the face of tyranny, this work was written in secret during the Nazi occupation of France, and premiered in London. He searches for transformation in the darkest of times, concluding in a triumphant exclamation: “Liberté!”
We conclude with Nathan Carter’s If I Can Help Somebody, a call to go out into the world to build a home that welcomes all.
